Note from PTA
Board
February is a very
busy month for our school and our
district. First, thanks to all that
have attended our PTA-hosted events
lately; Skate King Night and Bingo
Night were great fun. If you haven't
attended one yet, please consider
our next event on March 4th--Ben
Rush Swim Night at the Bellevue
Aquatic Center (details are seen
below).
We encourage all
registered voters to VOTE YES
for renewal of two school
levies and a new capital
improvement bond. Remember,
those ballots must be mailed no
later than February 9th. Every
vote counts!!
We are pleased to
share that the new running club
and robotics club are great
successes. Your PTA board has
been considering additional
spending opportunities and is
happy to announce we have
granted $5,000 to the school for
various needs including new
adjustable basketball hoops for
the gym. Thanks to all that
attended the PTA General
Meeting; our next meeting is
Thursday, April 22nd. We hope
you will attend these
informative evenings.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - PLEASE
HELP
Passport Coordinator
Ellen Krumm is looking for a new
Passport Program Coordinator! This
is a VERY FUN volunteer job, which
she has enjoyed immensely over the
years. Prep-work is already being
done by other people; the program
just needs a "point
person". Contact her with
questions (asking questions does not
obligate you!) at
ejkrumm@hotmail.com
Running Club Coaches
We are in need of additional
running coaches for our running
club due to its
popularity. Please consider
donating one hour a week to the
school and to your health by
jogging with this great group of
student runners every Thursday
from 3:05-4:05 PM. Contact Lisa
Sturgeon at
lisasturgeon@hotmail.com.
Parent
volunteers are the backbone
of any school, and we are
very appreciative of all the
hours donated by our
community. If you are
interested in volunteering
at Ben Rush, make sure you
are registered with the
school district. You can
register on-line at the
LWSD Volunteer Website.
Watch this newsletter for
future volunteer
opportunities.

yearbook.
We
are looking for group
shots of at least 2-3 or more kids

National Geographic's Geography
Bee
Every year the sixth grade participates
in National Geographic's Geography
Bee. After our classroom Geography Bees,
the top eleven students participated in
our Final Competition in
mid-January. The winner of the final
competition will take a written test
that is sent to the National Geographic
Society for scoring. The top 50 students
in the state will participate in the
Washington State Geography Bee in the
spring. We've had two kids move that
level in the past and hope this year's
makes it that far this year!
Congratulations to our finalists
this year!! ---Michelle Abelev,
Nitzan Axelrod, Scout Callens,
Austin Church, Kristen Chinn, Ruta
Dhaneshwar, Maya Lefelman, Evan
Ortega, Adi Rao, Amin Shayko and
Tristan Thompson.
Evan Ortega and Scout Callens
competed in the Championship Round,
with Evan as our final champion. We
all wish Evan well on his written
test!

Does your child need a little
encouragement to read aloud? Do
they like animals?

a dog. To learn more about this
wonderful program, please go to http://readingwithrover.org/.
Upcoming dates are February 16th,
March 2nd, March 16th, April 6th,
and April 20th.

WHO SAYS THERE'S NO
SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH!!
We need parents to occasionally make or
buy food for the PTA-hosted monthly
luncheons for our teachers and
staff. This is a great way to pitch in
without being at the school.
Please email rosechartrand@ymail.com
to learn more about how you can
help.
The next luncheon is Tuesday,
February 9th with the theme of
"Salads".

YOUR PTA
AND OUR FINANCIAL PICTURE
Support by
the PTA is increasingly important as
the state legislature struggles with
providing an adequate budget for
schools. The PTA's financial
statements and annual budget is
always available
on-line.
Our state
legislature is currently discussing
the state's K-12 budget. Contact
your state representative to learn
more about how you can support your
child's education.
