  Note from PTA Board

February is a very busy month for our school and our district. First, thanks to all that have attended our PTA-hosted events lately; Skate King Night and Bingo Night were great fun. If you haven't attended one yet, please consider our next event on March 4th--Ben Rush Swim Night at the Bellevue Aquatic Center (details are seen below).
We encourage all registered voters to VOTE YES for renewal of two school levies and a new capital improvement bond. Remember, those ballots must be mailed no later than February 9th. Every vote counts!!

We are pleased to share that the new running club and robotics club are great successes. Your PTA board has been considering additional spending opportunities and is happy to announce we have granted $5,000 to the school for various needs including new adjustable basketball hoops for the gym. Thanks to all that attended the PTA General Meeting; our next meeting is Thursday, April 22nd. We hope you will attend these informative evenings.

ELECTION DAY IS TUESDAY
Ballots have been distributed to registered voters for the Lake Washington School District replacement Educational Programs & Operations Levy, the replacement Capital Projects Levy and a new bond measure. For more information, go to:
www.vote4lwsdkids.org/
 Please support our school
by voting YES on all three proposals.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS BELARUS?

Passport Check Day is February 25th....and re-checks in the library at lunch recess every Tuesday! February's country list is available here.

Passport volunteers are always needed. Contact Ellen at ejkrumm@hotmail.com if interested.

SPIRIT DAY IS THE FIRST FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH

We have designed new Ben Rush Elementary School graphics and are providing more clothing choices this year. Order your spirit gear by clicking on this order form and sending it to school by February 18th. Orders will be delivered the first week of March.

The Science Fair is Coming!

Mark your calendars for the annual Rush Science Fair on Thursday, March 11th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the school gym. More details about science project requirements will be sent home with your child in the weeks to come. In the meantime, start thinking about what type of project your family would like to undertake. Some great ideas are available here.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED  -  PLEASE HELP

Passport Coordinator
Ellen Krumm is looking for a new Passport Program Coordinator! This is a VERY FUN volunteer job, which she has enjoyed immensely over the years. Prep-work is already being done by other people; the program just needs a "point person". Contact her with questions (asking questions does not obligate you!) at ejkrumm@hotmail.com

Running Club Coaches
We are in need of additional running coaches for our running club due to its popularity. Please consider donating one hour a week to the school and to your health by jogging with this great group of student runners every Thursday from 3:05-4:05 PM.  Contact Lisa Sturgeon at lisasturgeon@hotmail.com.

Parent volunteers are the backbone of any school, and we are very appreciative of all the hours donated by our community. If you are interested in volunteering at Ben Rush, make sure you are registered with the school district. You can register on-line at the

LWSD Volunteer Website Watch this newsletter for future volunteer opportunities.

LOOKING FOR HELP FROM ANY PARENT PHOTOGRAPHER

Our yearbook editor, Cornelia Kimmell, needs assistance in collecting classroom candid photos. If you happen to take a great photograph during a classroom activity, after-school class, concert or field trip, please contact Cornelia at cagkimmell@hotmail.com for submission in this school year's yearbook.

We are looking for group shots of at least 2-3 or more kids
or kids with the teachers and staff (no parents, please).

Calling All Ben Rush Dads and Granddads

Mark your calendar for our annual 'Dads Only' Passport Check day on March 25th at 8:30 AM until 10:15 AM. I am looking for 15 to 20 dads or grandfathers to help me make this special day a success. Please contact me with questions or your commitment to volunteer.

National Geographic's Geography Bee

Every year the sixth grade participates in National Geographic's Geography Bee. After our classroom Geography Bees, the top eleven students participated in our Final Competition in mid-January. The winner of the final competition will take a written test that is sent to the National Geographic Society for scoring. The top 50 students in the state will participate in the Washington State Geography Bee in the spring. We've had two kids move that level in the past and hope this year's makes it that far this year!

Congratulations to our finalists this year!! ---Michelle Abelev, Nitzan Axelrod, Scout Callens, Austin Church, Kristen Chinn, Ruta Dhaneshwar, Maya Lefelman, Evan Ortega, Adi Rao, Amin Shayko and Tristan Thompson.

Evan Ortega and Scout Callens competed in the Championship Round, with Evan as our final champion. We all wish Evan well on his written test!

READING WITH ROVER
dog reading
Does your child need a little encouragement to read aloud?  Do they like animals?

Consider taking them to the Borders book store at Redmond Town Center on Tuesday evenings so they can read to a dog. To learn more about this wonderful program, please go to http://readingwithrover.org/.

Upcoming dates are February 16th, March 2nd, March 16th, April 6th, and April 20th.

WHO SAYS THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH!!

We need parents to occasionally make or buy food for the PTA-hosted monthly luncheons for our teachers and staff. This is a great way to pitch in without being at the school.

Please email rosechartrand@ymail.com to learn more about how you can help.

The next luncheon is Tuesday, February 9th with the theme of "Salads".

YOUR PTA AND OUR FINANCIAL PICTURE

Support by the PTA is increasingly important as the state legislature struggles with providing an adequate budget for schools. The PTA's financial statements and annual budget is always available on-line.

Our state legislature is currently discussing the state's K-12 budget. Contact your state representative to learn more about how you can support your child's education.

Newletter Submissions
If you would like to submit an article or announcement for the next Rush PTA E-News, please contact the newsletter editor at benrushpta@comcast.net. All submissions must be received by February 19th for inclusion in the February 21st issue. Content may be adjusted to fit format.
