WALK-A-THON STARTS TOMORROW

Encourage your kids to collect pledges. We don't want kids going door to door alone; please make this a safe outing for our kids! Neighbors, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, co-workers, etc, all make great donors. Our goal is only $42 per child. If each child reaches our 50 lap goal and a .25 suggested donation per lap, each child only needs to get donations from three and a half people to reach our goal! Remember to give each donor a receipt for their donation; it is tax deductable.

Golden Acorn Nominations
Each year our PTA gives Golden Acorn Awards to individuals who have given exemplary service to children in our school community. These awards are very special and are given for continued and dedicated service. This is an excellent way to honor PTA volunteers and/or staff members for contributions to our school. These awards are presented at our annual volunteer tea on June 3rd (to which all volunteers are invited). Please turn in your nomination by Friday, May 14th.
Nomination forms are available here.

Helping Hands for Haiti: Every Penny Counts
Benjamin Rush Elementary Collect 574 Pounds of Coins for Haiti Earthquake Relief

Ben Rush students are not only learning about how different and difficult life in third world countries can be, but this year, they are making a difference! Haiti, with annual per capita income of less than $400 and an average life expectancy of 53 years, is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Students learned how life, unsustainable and miserable for most Haitians, was made even harder by the January 2010 earthquake. Knowing that "Every Penny Counts" each classroom became a "Helping Hands for Haiti" community, collecting pennies (and other coins) for 8 school days in April. With help from parents and family members, our students brought in 574 pounds of coins - which added up to $1,824.79!!  The funds will be sent to UNICEF for their Haiti Reconstruction Fund, helping kids in Haiti put their lives back together. Way to go, Rush!

The PTA is looking for volunteers to serve as the directors of Fundraising, Education, Health & Welfare, and Hospitality for the 2010-2011 school year. We'll highlight a different opportunity each time we send out the newsletter so that you can learn more about these fun opportunities.

Worried you don't have time? Many of these positions are shared among several volunteers, so you don't have to take on all the responsibilities -- just what interests you. If you are interested in making a difference in your child's education, please contact joy.jernigan@live.com for more information.
