Cub Scout Basics:

Cub Scout Pack 428 is a very active group that serves boys from grades 1 through 5, mostly boys who attend Ben Franklin, Ben Rush or Rose Hill Elementary Schools or boys who live in the neighborhood.

Pack is the term that we use when we mean the entire group. A Cub Scout Pack is divided into dens of a single grade level.
-1st graders are in a Tiger Cub den and work on the Tiger Cub badge.
-2nd graders are in a Wolf den and work on the Wolf badge.
-3rd graders are in a Bear den and work on the Bear badge.
-4th graders are in a Webelos I den and work on the Webelos badge.
-5th graders are in a Webelos II den until they earn the Arrow of Light Award, then they may join a Boy Scout Troop in the spring of their 5* grade year.

We meet as a Pack approximately twice each month. One meeting is held at Rose Hill Elementary in the Commons/Gym area. The other meeting is commonly referred to as our "Pack Outing" or "Pack Activity". This meeting is held at a different fun, interesting location each month, depending on the activity. Samples of activities planned this year include:
•    The traditional Pinewood Derby - boys make and race their own model wooden cars.
•    The annual Rocket Launch - boys make and launch their own rockets.
•    Bridle Trails State Park Restoration Project
•    BSA Residence Camp, BSA Day Camp, BSA Winter Camp, BSA Mom & Me Camp - BSA (Boy Scouts of America) camps are where scouts (and their parents if they choose to attend!) get to learn the skills of archery, bb guns, camp fires, whittling, knot tying, hiking, obstacle courses, skits, songs - and other fun scout stuff- under the guidance of well-trained staff members.
•    And there's more!

Individual Dens also meet twice per month, with one meeting held at Ben Franklin Elementary and the other meeting exploring an interesting location within our community. All activities are geared toward helping scouts earn their badge of rank for the year, but there will be activities that must be completed at home, as well.
Cub Scouting helps build strong families. Scouting provides a time-tested structure that helps bond parent/child development through group and individual activities, recognition and advancement. Your child needs your encouragement, guidance and participation along his or her Scouting path. At least one parent or guardian should accompany the scout to den and pack meetings, although the entire family is welcome as long as siblings are appropriately supervised so the scouts can work on their badges.

Cub Scouting is flexible. The Cub Scout program encourages involvement in varied individual, team and community activities. There may be times when these schedules conflict with scout activities, and that is absolutely fine. Our program allows scouts to catch up on most missed activities at home or at a "catch-up" meeting later in the year.
